“Hooray, it’s flu season!” said no one EVER. However, since the inevitable coughs, sniffles, shivers and flues are upon us, we may as well fight back. I take vitamin C everyday, but that doesn’t seem to be enough when I’m in a room full of hacking, sneezing bodies. Having already had a bought of a nasty sinus flu earlier this month, I feel qualified to share my ginger turmeric wellness shot remedy. But I warn you, THIS IS NOT FOR THE WEAK OF HEART. It burns going down, makes your eyes water, and turns your stomach in knots for about five minutes. Seriously. That being said, it is a miracle worker. When I get sick like this, it typically lasts 3-4 weeks. I beat this one in 1 week flat.
Any time I feel a little tickle, I make a few ginger turmeric wellness shots to keep in the fridge and gulp one down in the mornings. Real ginger root is key, as is the garlic; powdered spices don’t pack the punch, they just have a pleasant flavor. I buy a big piece of ginger and just keep in the freezer. That way I’m not wasting any and I can easily pull it out and grate an inch or two whenever I need it.
Ginger Turmeric Wellness Shot
Yields 2 Servings
1 inch Fresh Ginger
1 clove Garlic
1 Lemon- juiced
½ t. Turmeric
Dash of Cayenne Pepper
1 t. Apple Cider Vinegar
¼ c. Orange Juice
The key to this recipe is blending all the ingredients at a high speed to ensure no chunks of garlic. That being said I would highly recommend mincing the garlic VERY well and grating the ginger on the small side of your cheese grater, or using a micro plane. As intense as this drink is, we don’t need any extra bits to deter us from getting the whole thing down the hatch. After you have those two prepped, add all the ingredients to your blender and whiz on high for about a minute, or until it looks smooth. Once you’ve tried this concoction, and know you can stomach it, try making a double batch and pouring the mixture into small jars to keep in the fridge for the week. That way you can grab and go without the prep. You can also add honey, but I find that there’s not much that can soften this drink. Good luck and be healthy!
